The CHI 98 Video Program is an opportunity to
present work that relies on
dynamic presentation. Videos can address any area of HCI including visual
design, innovative interaction techniques, multimedia, usability testing
and design techniques. In keeping with the CHI 98 conference theme, "Making
the Impossible Possible," particularly appropriate topics this year include
technologies that solve previously unsolvable problems, novel interaction
paradigms and HCI in developing countries. Video submissions in the three
application domains of education, entertainment and health care are also
particularly encouraged.
Videos are also an ideal medium for presenting visions of the future. We
encourage submissions of this type which go beyond the domains of office
work and western life-style aspirations. We are looking for well
researched portrayals of possible forms and functions of computing
technology in a wide variety of cultures, activities and environments
together with a diversity of user populations. In the spirit of the
conference this might include ideas about how new technologies might
address currently impossible problems.
Review ProcessVideos will be reviewed by international experts. Accepted videos will be selected on the basis of their interest to members of the human-computer interaction community, their technical content and how well they communicate the purpose and impact of the work. They must have suitable production quality.FormatVideosVideos should be from 2 to 8 minutes in length. Stricter acceptance criteria will be applied to videos exceeding 8 minutes. All common video formats will be accepted. In particular, Beta SP, 3/4" U-matic, Hi-8, Super-VHS formats will be accepted in the PAL, NTSC, or SECAM standards (except Hi-8 PAL and Hi-8 SECAM). Regular VHS format is acceptable, but discouraged. Please contact the video co-chairs at chi98-videos@acm.org if you need to submit in a different format. In determining legibility and visibility of detail, submitters should take into account a slight loss of quality in the final video program due to copying and format conversion where necessary. Extended AbstractPrepare a two-page summary of the video, suitable for publication in the CHI 98 Summary. It should contain video title and author(s), contact information, keywords, a 100-word abstract andtext describing the video's content. It must be prepared in the Conference Publications Format. Both the Video and the extended abstract should be designed as complementary but separate presentations that can be viewed or read independently of each other. Electronic VersionElectronic versions of accepted video extended abstract will be published in the CHI 98 Electronic Publication. They are due at the same time as the rest of the submission.AssistanceThe Videos Co-Chairs have put together a Guide to Successful Video Submissions to help authors create the best video possible.Upon AcceptanceAuthors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by early-November 1997.If the video is accepted it will be included in the CHI 98 Video Program which will be shown at most of the conference hotels, and will be available for sale to all attendees. After the conference it will be sold by ACM. The primary author of each accepted video will receive an Author Kit with release forms giving ACM permission to sell the entire Video after the conference and detailed instructions on how to submit the camera-ready and electronic materials for publication. These materials are due by 2 January 1998. Submissions
